Personality

In our kennel we strive for beauty and personality  The personality of a German Shepherd can be expressed as a combination of its temperament and character.  It should exhibit confidence and poise around strangers and new environments without displaying aggression.  It should be willing to learn, keen and alert, with a friendly and eager disposition.

Personality plays an important role in our breeding program.  We never breed to any dogs that display aggression, overly timid, disinterest, anxiety, or fear.  This is one of the reasons we check pedigrees of outside bloodlines for multiple generations before deciding to incorporate new lines into our kennel.

Most German Shepherd Breeders strive to produce beautiful dogs.  In our kennel we also strive for beauty and personality.  We start socializing, handling, and training new puppies right from birth to make them well adjusted happy dogsThe end result is a beautiful, spunky, well-adjusted, happy and healthy German Shepherd Puppy.

The German Shepherd Dog should be stamped with a look of quality and nobility, difficult to define but unmistakable when present. A good German Shepherd Dog never looks common
- the CKC German Shepherd Dog standard

Structure

A beautiful dog should remain healthy and beautiful as it ages.  There are many factors that make a German Shepherd majestic and beautiful.  It begins with the breed standard that lays down the foundation on which breeders build upon.

Professional breeders are not all trying to create the same dog, rather we all strive to create what we consider to be the perfect dog.  In our kennel we believe that structure is just the beginning.  We also include health, genetics, and longevity into our ideas of structure.  A beautiful dog should remain healthy and beautiful as it ages.

We often breed to German Shepherd Dogs owned by other Breeders to incorporate desirable genetic traits into our bloodlines.  We frequently purchase or co-own Dogs with other breeders to enrich our bloodlines.  It takes many months, sometimes years of research before deciding to incorporate new bloodlines into our kennel.

The head is noble, cleanly chiselled, strong without coarseness, but above all, not fine, and in proportion to the body. The head of the male is distinctly masculine, and that of the bitch, distinctly feminine. The expression, keen, intelligent, and composed.
- the CKC German Shepherd Dog standard

Versatility

Red Sable female 'Dezi' earning her Herding Instinct Certificate.  The versatility of the Germen Shepherd breed is astounding.  Originally bred as a working dog (for herding sheep), they have been utilized in many different job roles.  They can perform most every task you can imagine for a dog.

Some areas this breed excels in are, search and rescue, drug enforcement, tracking, herding, therapy, patrolling, military scouts, explosives detection, disability assistance, personal  protection, and much more.  They also make wonderful family pets This is a picture of our Red Sable female 'Dezi' earning her Herding Instinct Certificate.

Our dogs are North American show lines, that are not naturally aggressive.  There are no real limitations that can be placed on North American lines that would prevent them from performing the same type of duties as Working lines, except in the case of temperament, where aggression is a desirable trait, such as police dogs and attack dogs.

Forequarters – The shoulder blades are long and obliquely angled, lay on flat and not placed forward. The upper arm joins the shoulder blade at about a right angle. Both the upper arm and the shoulder blade are well muscled.
- the CKC German Shepherd Dog standard

Trainability

show dogs must possess a higher degree of intelligence than the average dog.  The trainability of any dog is, for the most part, determined by its intelligence and eagerness to lean.  Trainability is an important factor to consider when planning a breeding, it must be bred into a blood line, as it has a lot to do with genetics.

Contrary to what many people believe, show dogs must possess a higher degree of intelligence than the average dog.  There is a great deal of training, memorization, and obedience involved in preparing a dog for the show ring.

Our German Shepherds are show dogs having achieved, or working toward, champion status.  We have sold puppies to individuals who have gone on to win various temperament, herding, conformation, and obedience titles.  Some dogs we have sold are working in search and rescue, tracking, therapy, agility, herding, ring sport, conformation, and companion dog.

Hindquarters – The whole assembly of thigh, viewed from the side, is broad, with both upper and lower thigh well muscled, forming as nearly as possible a right angle. The upper thighbone parallels the shoulder blade while the lower thighbone parallels the upper arm.

The black and tan saddle back is the typical look that most people recognize.

German Shepherd Colors
The black and tan saddle back is considered the typical "classic" look that most people recognize.  The tan color can vary from light to dark brown.  Very light shades of brown that appear washed out are considered a fault.  Black and red are also very common.  The red hue ranges from light to dark
mahogany, with the darker coloring preferred.
When the saddle is larger extending down to the dogs elbows it is considered a blanket back When there is very little tan or red marking and the body is predominately black it is considered a bi-color.  There are many more color variations and markings.  Some acceptable colors (CKC breed standard) also include silver sable, black sable, red sable, and solid black.  Colors that are considered a fault (CKC breed standard) are black and (pale) cream, liver, blue, and solid white.

Sable refers to the color banding on the individual hairs.
Red Sable

Sable German Shepherds
Sables, when talking about German Shepherds, refers to the color banding on the individual hairs.  Each hair can be more than one color, predominantly tan, red, gray, black, with varying shades of that color, usually with a black tip of varying length.  The color identification of Sables is complicated by the fact that virtually every one has a unique coat color and pattern.  When we classify our sable dogs we are talking about the dominant coat color, usually red (mahogany).

We are pleased to make available an extensive collection of German Shepherd pictures.  In our photo galleries you can see the different types of German Shepherds we have in our kennel, including the various stages of sable puppy coat development.

Plush Coat is a Normal Coat with a longer outer coat and a thicker undercoat.
Solid Black Plush Coat

Normal (Stock) Coat
The Normal Coat is the most common and desirable coat.  These dogs are double coated.  They have a thick outer coat consisting of straight, coarse, guard hairs laying flat against the body.  This outer coat protects against the elements and sheds water.  The undercoat has shorter, finer hairs, that help insulate the dog.  The hairs on the front of the legs,  feet, ears and head are short.  The hairs on the back of legs, neck, back and tail are longer and thicker.  The majority of our dogs are normal coated.

Plush coat
The Plush Coat is simply a variation of the Normal Coat having a slightly longer outer coat with a thicker undercoat.  The outer coat must still be laying flat against the body.

The Long (Stock) Coat is double coated, similar to the Normal Coat.
Black and Red Long (stock) Coat

Long coat
There are two distinct types of long coat German Shepherds.

The Long (Stock) Coat is double coated, similar to the Normal Coat.  However, the outer coat hairs are longer, not always straight, and don't lay flat against the dogs body.  The hairs are long around the ears, backs of legs, and tail.  Our Long Coat German Shepherds are of this variety.

The Long (Open) Coat does not have a full undercoat, it is considered single coated.  It typically has very long, soft hair, that forms a parting line across the back.  This type of coat does not provide much protection against the elements.
